Your CV is one of the most important documents you will ever write. It is a sales tool to get you an interview, so it is important to get it right. The right choice of words can genuinely make a difference as to whether you get that dream job or not. Stick to our tips below to ensure you show any potential employer just why they should hire you!
- Start with a short personal statement or objective which summarises your background, the job you are looking for and why you will be good at it.
- Make sure it is well written, grammatically sound and there are no spelling mistakes.
- Leave it 24 hours and then read your CV aloud to a friend for a sense and style check.
- Add the months as well as the years that you started and finished each job and explain any gaps.
- Don’t waffle, make every word count.
- Tailor your CV to each job you apply for, emphasising transferable skills and relevant achievements.
- Clearly present your contact details in minimal space.
- Avoid flashy graphics, layouts and fonts, unless you are a designer.
- Summarise the responsibilities, duties and achievements in each job, rather than reproducing a job spec.
- Think of yourself as a brand, tell a story that people want to listen to.
- No photos!
