Whilst preparing the new issue of our latest careers guide, Evidence generation and communication: a guide to getting started in HEOR/market access medical writing (published June 2018)  we invited people working in HEOR/market access to tell us why they are doing so….

“I work in HEOR/market access because we get to work across a variety of disease areas on some very interesting products, putting our expertise to good use. Vitaccess also offers flexible working, from part-time working to working from home; we can do great work while keeping a great work-life balance.”
Catherine Åkesson, Associate Director of HEOR at Vitaccess

“I work in HEOR/market access because it is great to be able to use the skills I gained from my degree in my role and to know that the work we produce can benefit patients in the long-term.”
Daisy Bridge, Senior Value Analyst at Adelphi Values PROVE

“I work in HEOR/market access strategy consulting because I have the opportunity to help raise awareness of drugs and devices in the community and shape a pathway for access of these important treatments to patients. Every day in consulting is a new day and I am always learning something new. Our world is constantly changing and new ideas are always explored to determine how we can best support our clients. Coupled with the fact that it’s a ‘team sport’ makes it a very rewarding environment in which to work.”
Rina Chotai, Director at Consulting at McCann Health

“I work in HEOR/market access writing because it’s varied, challenging and full of opportunities.”
Sophie Doran, Senior Medical Writer at DRG Abacus

“I work in HEOR/market access because I enjoy communicating scientific and clinical concepts; HEOR allows me to do this with a relatively rapid positive impact on society at large. It also offers an attractive career-path with lots of scope for creativity and professional development.”
Obaro Evuarherhe, Senior Consultant, Value Demonstration Practice at Oxford PharmaGenesis

“I work in HEOR/market access writing because it brings together three core drivers of my career in healthcare communications: evidence-based differentiation of a product or device, technology-enabled teamwork to improve our clients’ business performance and, above all, helping patients to benefit from innovative medicines while making better use of healthcare resources.”
Trevor Fitzpatrick, Global Head, Market Access at Envision Pharma Group

“I work in HEOR/market access and I really enjoy the challenging and diverse nature of the work. Each day is different and there are many opportunities for creative thinking and teamwork to meet clients’ needs.”
Clare Foy, Senior Director at Consulting at McCann Health

“I work in HEOR/market access communications because understanding the value new treatments offer to patients, healthcare systems and wider society is hugely important, and because the work itself is so varied and thought-provoking.”
Colin Glen, Principal Consultant, Value Demonstration Practice at Oxford PharmaGenesis

“I work in HEOR/market access because it’s both interesting and rewarding to report comprehensive, well-designed economic evaluations of current treatments. It involves assimilating the latest efficacy/effectiveness data, together with cost of treatment and healthcare resource utilisation data. This helps establish the true value of such treatments from a public health perspective and provides important, valuable insights for clinicians and policy makers.”
David Griffiths, Senior Medical Writer at Bioscript

“I work in HEOR/market access because it allows me to combine my passion for science and writing at the same time. I do something different every day, from analysing the data to writing and editing. But most importantly, I feel that I contribute to improved healthcare and access to novel medicines. You can never get bored in such a fast-paced environment and you learn something new every day.”
Klaudia Kornalska, Value Analyst at Adelphi Values PROVE

“I work in HEOR/market access because I love knowing that what we do impacts patients’ lives in a positive way. We help pharmaceutical companies put safe and efficient medications on the market.”
Hara Kousoulakou, Director of HEOR at Vitaccess

“I work in HEOR/market access communications because I enjoy the challenge of turning potentially complex scientific material into something an audience can understand.”
Lisa Law, Consultant, Value Demonstration Practice at Oxford PharmaGenesis

“I work in HEOR/market access, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. It has a very diverse market access landscape, in addition to the differences in culture, language and economic development within the region (which makes our work interesting and exciting!). We must listen to clients and their affiliates, understand their branding strategies and goals, and try to work out how these can be supported with consideration of local clinical practice and reimbursement reality. It can be frustrating at times but never boring.”
Pin Lu at AMICULUM Asia

“I work in HEOR/market access writing because I can use my scientific understanding and language capabilities to help bring treatments to patients.”
Brigitte Moore, Principal Medical Writer at DRG Abacus

“I work in HEOR/market access writing, with a focus on treatments for rare diseases. Given that many orphan drugs come with a high price tag and are targeted at discrete groups of patients, it’s really important that we and our clients are clear and objective about the value that their product brings to the health system. I really enjoy the process of looking at underserved diseases from every angle to define the unmet need, and then drawing together the available evidence to create a compelling value story that resonates with patients, caregivers, clinicians and payers.”
Jonathan Morton at Comradis, an AMICULUM agency

“I work in HEOR/market access writing to evaluate how healthcare resources are distributed within healthcare settings and organisations.”
Mitesh Nakum, Senior Consultant at Envision Pharma Group

“I work in HEOR/market access because I can use my medical sciences degree and expand on my scientific knowledge every day whilst working on a variety of simulating projects, without being in a lab.”
Louisa Oliver, Senior Value Analyst at Adelphi Values PROVE

“I work in HEOR/market access because I find it rewarding to employ the deep analytic skills I learned in my economics training to support efficient patient access to healthcare technologies.”
Gauri Saal, Principal Medical Writer at Prime Global

“I work in HEOR/market access writing because I love the challenge of translating complex clinical and cost-effectiveness evidence into value propositions that align with payer priorities and understanding. The value of a product has many angles, and I enjoy finding key components of the evidence that add greater value for the product, creating greater opportunities for patients to have fair and equal access to therapies.”
Arabella Sargent, Value Strategy Lead at Envision Pharma Group

“I work in HEOR/market access writing to communicate how treatments developed in clinical trials are used and how well they work among patients in the real world.”
Karen Smoyer, Senior Strategy Lead at Envision Pharma Group

“I work in HEOR/market access writing because I love being involved with cutting edge therapies and technologies across a diverse array of disease areas. Working at DRG Abacus allows me to do this, working in a variety of scientific areas and on a wide range of projects. I wanted a fresh challenge away from lab research and market access was the perfect choice.”
Rod Walker, Medical Writer at DRG Abacus

“I work in HEOR/market access because it’s all about proving and providing value: to payers, healthcare providers, clinicians and patients. I find that strategically it is interesting and challenging, and I like finding evidence-based solutions for clients that will ultimately improve healthcare.”
Ruth Whittington, CEO at Rx Communications

“I work in HEOR/market access because the work is very varied. I feel it’s a good environment for those who don’t just want to work with numbers, or don’t just want to be writing or editing. On a given day you might be analysing new data that’s coming in, or looking years back to collect old information, and then writing or presenting this to explain something, or persuade someone. The work stays fresh this way.”
Robin Wyn, Value Analyst at Adelphi Values PROVE
